By vibrating the formwork itself, they transmit energy through the entire cross‑section, promoting uniform compaction. Care must be taken to fix them securely and to control vibration intensity to prevent damage to the formwork or displacement of reinforcement.Surface vibrators are used primarily for slabs, pavements, and industrial floors. These include vibrating screeds and beam vibrators that both level and compact the concrete surface. They are drawn or pushed across the slab, consolidating the upper layer and helping to achieve a uniform finish. For thicker slabs, surface equipment is often combined with internal vibrators to ensure full‑depth compaction.More advanced equipment includes vibratory rollers for road construction and large slab work. These rollers apply both static load and dynamic vibration to compact concrete layers, commonly in roller‑compacted concrete applications. They are effective for large areas where high productivity is required and surface texture is not critical.Selecting suitable compaction equipment depends on element dimensions, reinforcement density, workability of the concrete mix, and the required surface finish. Over‑vibration can cause segregation, bleeding, and loss of entrained air in air‑entrained concrete, while under‑vibration leaves voids and honeycombing.
